Essentially,
a blog is a simple to use web based content management system. If you
can write an email, you can blog. Blog software comes in many forms,
sizes and costs. Initially, the blog revolution began by private
citizens who wanted to share their individual interests online. They
created blogs on free portals such as Blogger, Live Journal, etc. Or,
they created their own blogs using software such as
Word Press or Joomla. These people became known as
blogger’s. In just a few short years, based on volume, quality of
writing and influence, blogging has grown from the pursuit of private
citizens, to a massive realm of influence known as the blogsphere.
Part of this rapid explosion is due in part to RSS (Really Simple
Syndication.) Most blog software is built with the ability of people to
syndicate their content to other Web sites. This means 'A" Web
site can display their content on Web site "B" with a couple clicks of a
mouse. Individual users can also add a blog RSS feed to their personal
homepages, RSS newsreaders, phone, etc. When a person opens their
homepage they can see what’s new at their favorite blog without even
visiting the remote site. If something interests them, they can click
through and read the whole article or blog post.
Also, blog
software allows for user interaction, such as leaving a comment about a
specific blog post, or creating their own post. Comments often have
their own RSS feed as well, which allows users to stay up to date about
a specific topic of interest. People can subscribe or unsubscribe to an
rss feed at any time with no involvement by the original creator.
Blogs
also incorporate a variety of other technologies such as ping, track
backs, social book marking, blog rolls and more to help build content
and community.
Combined, cost, ease of use, RSS, commenting and
related technologies have created a whole new aspect of the internet
known as the blogsphere and web 2.0. Savvy marketers utilize blog
software and advertise in the blogsphere to maximize brand awareness
and ultimately sales.
